One in five adults in the UK have hearing loss, which can result in difficulty following conversations and social withdrawal. Today’s hearing aids amplify sound, but may not provide the other support that our brains need to make sense of speech. Naomi Nota (The University of Edinburgh) and Muzna Shehzad (University of Nottingham) explore what’s really important in understanding spoken language. They reveal how you don’t just listen to words, you predict what will be said next. But could future hearing aids anticipate speech like humans do?
